By Hilal Nakiboglu Isler, April 18, 2007, Academics, Nirali, Daily, Arts

The names of the 2007 Guggenheim Fellows [1] have been announced. And this year, five desi Americans are on the list of the 189 chosen scholars and artists.
The Fellows are [2] selected on the “basis of distinguished achievement in the past and exceptional promise for future accomplishment.” Achievement in 78 different fields (“from natural sciences to the creative arts”) is considered. Among the awardees: computer scientists [3] Dr. Sanjeev Khanna of the University of Pennsylvania and [4] Dr. Salil Vadhan of Harvard University.
[5] Suketu Mehta, a writer from New Jersey was recognized for his work (remember his Pulitzer Prize-finalist [6] book Maximum City?). [7] Rudresh K. Mahanthappa (a Brooklyn-based composer and jazz musician) and [8] Dr. Arjun M. Heimsath (an earth scientist at Dartmouth) were also given fellowships for success in and dedication to their respective fields.
The Guggenheim Foundation has given out $256 million in fellowship monies since its founding in 1925.
Previous recipients have included Henry [9] Kissinger, [10] Martha Graham, Ansel [11] Adams, Vladimir [12] Nabokov and Linus [13] Pauling.
Congratulations to all awardees (and here’s hoping next year we’ll have some female representation).
