Karan Grewal pulled an all-nighter on Sunday.

The 21-year-old accounting major briefly saw his suite-mate before finally crawling [1] into bed at 7 on Monday morning. The two didn’t say anything to each other.

Twelve hours later, Grewal was startled by police officials banging on his door: Virginia Tech’s [2] Harper Hall, room 2121.

Grewal’s suite-mate, Seung-hui Cho, had committed murder. Thirty-two times over. Armed with two weapons: a 9-millimeter and a .22-caliber gun. He had then shot himself in the head.

“I was shocked. He didn’t look like a guy who could really do that,” Grewal [3] told reporters. “He wasn’t angry. He just appeared to be shy, not angry.”

At 9 a.m. on Monday morning, Cho mailed a package to NBC, containing a taped message. “You had a hundred billion chances and ways to have avoided today,” he said on camera, “but you decided to spill my blood.”

Karan Grewal, who shared the suite with Cho and four others, saw the tape and [4] was surprised. “It was a totally different person. He was staring straight at the camera, and he never stared into our eyes or even looked at us.”

“I never heard his voice while I was in the room with him.”

Grewal and Cho are both from Virginia.
