I don't think this is a sari. a sari is usually 6 meters of cloth and this seems to be three parts. I think this is a choli top, a lengha skirt and a odhani veil, which is supposed to be worn over the right shoulder.

Leaving aside any possibility the movie may have wanted to show inept adaption of "ethnic" dress, there are over 80 different ways of draping a sari. The standard nivi drape only came into being after films. The many online instructions on draping are a good start. Find an Indian grandmother to tweak the fine points for you - she won't be reticent.

Thanks very much for the video link; if anyone does have any additional tips, the info will be appreciated. Another friend recommended some beauty salons in the NYC area, incuding Ritu's (86th & 1st), Praba (99th & 3rd), and Perfect Shapes (with three locations in Manhattan), so those may work too. The wedding party will have its hands full as it is, though one did volunteer to tie the sari, it would mean a really long day for the person though and my friend doesn't want to inconvenience anyone and wants to be sure the family can just relax and focus on each other during the wedding. Thanks again for the information.

That's an interesting question Laurelyn. I hope someone with some NYC-specific knowledge will let us know, but generally I think asking a salesperson at a nice sari shop or someone in the wedding party for advice and help in wearing a sari is a good idea.

After kind of a longish intro, this 2-part youtube video offers instruction on how to wear a sari in the Gujarati style, but I think it best for a first-time wearer to have someone else tie a sari on her instead of trying to follow a video. Good luck!

If one wanted to find a really good consultant, in New York City, to drape and tie a sari properly and formally (say for a wedding in Manhattan), is there a person or place or boutique(s) you would particularly recommend? I am admittedly clueless; I wouldn't be wearing a sari myself (though maybe someday I'll be brave and try) but a friend who wants to wear one and get it right but doesn't know what resources are available in NYC is interested in knowing. Thanks. (and yes, I'm going to go check whatever stylists are listed on photos on this webpage too ...)
