Taking The Shafi Express To The Top

I’m lucky if I can snag a pillow on red-eye flights, or get a glass of tomato juice from one of the flight attendants. Flying on the Shafi Express—that’s the nickname for rising Manhattan socialite Shafi Roeper’s Gulfstream IV jet—is worlds apart from the economy experience.

Fashion magazine W features Roepers in its May issue, deeming her “unlike the rash of new twentysomething It heiresses.” Making her entrée into New York society as the 43-year-old mother of three and wife of hedge fund honcho Alexander Roepers, she knows that her middle-class background and Pakistani heritage set her apart from the other society wives: “When you combine my looks with the high-style fashion I wear, I probably stand out a little,” she says. “But I don’t mind it. I don’t have any pretenses about my background.”

Born in Nairobi, Kenya, and raised in a conservative Muslim household in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, she worked for The Miami Herald and Saks Fifth Avenue before meeting her husband. At their current residence on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, formerly home to the British Consul General, the bedroom where Queen Elizabeth II once slept is now Roeper’s dressing room.

Oh, and that luxury-class flight on the Shafi Express? (Cue Robin Leach.) Online reservations are not available, but those personally invited by Roepers to come on board can expect swivel leather seats draped with individual Hermès blankets. Passengers on this G4 may not get individual packets of peanuts, but they will be passing around … a $2,000 Hermès cedar bowl filled with just-popped Newman’s Own popcorn.
